I.T.E.M.

In order to facilitate conduction of energy consumption measurement, we developed the Interactive Tool for Energy Measurement (I.T.E.M).The I.T.E.M. is an application for Android, which enables to exploit various hardware components, even those beyond scope of this paper: 1. CPU, 2. Storage (Card), 3. Screen, 4. Speakers (Audio), 5. RAM Memory, 6. Mobile of Wi-Fi Network, 7. Bluetooth and 8. Near Field Communication (NFC).Moreover, I.T.E.M. could also facilitate measurements of data streaming in 3G/4G networks. The I.T.E.M. provides convenient way of definition of measurement scenarios.The parameters for each scenario can be entered by visual way in dedicated graphical dialog.Certain scenarios support are consisting of a sequence of steps (e.g., screen scenario), each one changes investigated parameter.For instance, Screen scenario increases brightness level in each step by constant value.Total number of steps and duration of each step can be set as desired.In order to raise efficiency of the measurement process, the I.T.E.M. supports measurement emph{plans}, which sequentially execute all previously defined scenarios.A plan consists of at least one scenario.Before launching a new scenario, all allocated resources of previous one are released and an idle interval of 10 seconds is inserted in order to let background processes calm down.This behavior grants sufficient isolation level of each executed scenario.Each scenario can be present in a plan multiple times having different parameters specified.Description of each scenario as well as fine grained text log of events are shown on the screen and written to a text log file on UE's external storage.Furthermore, the I.T.E.M. can act as Jabber/XMPP instant messaging client, it means, events are send to a human operator who can therefore oversee measurement remotely using e.g., laptop or smartphone.An event is a piece of text information, describing outcome of important part of a scenario.In order to prevent undesired influencing of measured results due to overhead of sending data through wireless channels, all events are stored in a buffer and send as a batch upon completing a scenario.Although it is not currently possible to launch a plan remotely, this feature can be added easily in future.Instant messaging feature has been developed to simplify management of long running measurements.Moreover, defined plans can be stored as XML files on smart device's external storage and loaded whenever necessary.
