“PocketPhonics teaches the basics of reading and writing to young kids. Most surprising? It seems to work.” 148apps.com
PocketPhonics is used in hundreds of elementary schools and pre-schools to teach kids letter sounds, first words and handwriting. Its aligns with the Common Core State Standards. Independent research (see appsinmypocket.com/research) found children learnt nine times as fast using PocketPhonics as compared to a classroom lesson. Over nearly five years, PocketPhonics has been continuously enhanced based on feedback from parents and teachers.

-“PocketPhonics is seriously educational and I think it’s a terrific tool for helping early readers. You can tell that a ton of thought and research was put into it and best of all, they talked and listened to teachers. It shows.” iPhoneMom.com
-“When it comes to learning apps for young learners and early readers, there is no better choice than abc PocketPhonics." ipad-applications.neiia.com
Children are taught letter sounds in small groups and shown how to blend them to sound out words (e.g c-a-t is cat).
PocketPhonics shows children how to write letters using an arrow they can follow with their finger or stylus. PocketPhonics supports two different writing styles, and for each style, kids can write in lowercase, uppercase and cursive.
By registering, parents and teachers can monitor kids’ progress online, and receive a weekly email on their childs progress. A child’s progress is tracked across multiple devices. The app uses the progress tracking data to focus children on what they most need to work on. So, when learning a group of six letter sounds, if the child has mastered three of them then the app keeps their primary focus on learning the other three.
Teachers dont need to worry about making sure kids have the same iPad today as yesterday simplifying the management of iPads in the classroom. If a child picks up a different iPad today, they still automatically continue on with they were learning yesterday on another iPad.

Phonics (letter sounds) help children learn to read by understanding the sounds that letters make. The Congressionally-mandated National Reading Panel concluded that “children who have phonics instruction read better and spell better than other children”.
Letter sounds (how we say the letters when we use them in words) are not the same as the letter names (what we call the letters). Montessori & other experts recommend not including letter names when teaching letter sounds as it can confuse children by introducing too much at once. PocketPhonics focuses solely on letter sounds so children can learn to read more quickly.
PocketPhonics teaches the sounds for all the letters in the alphabet plus over 30 letter sounds like ‘sh’ and ‘ch’, because they are key to reading so many frequently-used words.
Using a unique, “letter sounds make words” spelling game, children learn how to sound out and spell 160 frequently used words.
